The Nevada city of Winnemucca, with a population of less than 7,500, is named after the 19th Century Chief Winnemuccas daughter Sarah who pioneered fair treatment and education for the local Shoshone and Paiute tribes. It is located in Humboldt County and has a racecourse catering for unusual tastes. The course on the Humboldt County Fairgrounds, which has itself staged racing since 1896, is a 4 furlong oval course with separate 402 metre chute and first staged the unusual sport of mule racing in 2002. The principal race is the Humboldt County Futurity, a traditional race which continues to this day.
